If you're planning on going on a holiday, don't let others hold you back. Travelling solo is a lot easier than you think.

Where to start

Some like to plan out their trip entirely and others like a bit more freedom. I would say that I'm the latter of the two, but regardless you need to know where you want to start your travels. I personally like to write a list of things I definitely want to do and mark them on a map, from there I like to look for volunteer programs/trips in one or all of those regions. Once you have chosen a program/trip it's a lot easier to plan your journey from there. Once that's done I find it's easier to make a decision about where I want to end my trip and then you can see where the trip takes you, but at least you have a start and a finish line.

- First thing's first - Do your research. Investigating when and where you will be going to make sure you are comfortable with cost, the environment, weather and other aspects of the trip. Use apps like Pinterest to get ideas, Evernote to record them and then Wunderlist to break them down into small tasks and shared lists. Be wary of using some hotel comparison sites; always use Incognito Mode on Google Chrome to prevent tracking via cookies, as you may be exposed to unscrupulous practices of price hiking, etc.

- Identify your purpose or your goal. Is it to visit a location, meet a person, do a hike, or visit a landmark?

- Find accommodation. This is key, as your budget can blow out extensively if you're not careful. Is a cheap hotel really cheap if you need to take a taxi to get to anywhere? Is there any public transport where you are staying? Find reviews and use comparison websites that have reviews from other guests (always try and find sites that have hundreds or thousands of reviews, not tens!).

Meeting other travellers

- Backpackers (great place to find out spots others have travelled in that region)
