When it comes to saving to go travelling, there are countless blogs and websites that can give you in the right mindset for saving. In this article, I'll discuss some of the more efficient ways I've found to be able to mix the best of both worlds for both work and leisure.
Flights
Some of the best deals for flights can be found right before you expect to fly. It's kind of risky, but on flights that aren't full, this is a great hack for getting a cheap flight.
Other ways to save money include:
- Travelling at cheaper times / off-peak / red-eye
- Search for flights using apps, such as SkyScanner / tools that can view peak times such as weekends, etc, are useful.
- Fly routes with multiple stops / indirect
- Travel in off-seasons / Europe in Fall / Asia in the winter / holidays & flights during normal school periods, instead of holidays.
- Mix & Match flights / avoid flex tickets
- Use Status and Travel Points with an Airline Loyalty Program
Accommodation
The types of accommodation that are available are dependent on your destination, however hotels can often be very expensive. Google promotional codes and discounts on any hotels; also use "Cashback" websites like Cashrewards, etc.
Other ways to save money on accommodation include:
- Use airbnb / similar apps
- Try looking for private rooms on flatmates.com, or similar websites for short term rentals
- Eat locally instead of at restaurants or room service. "Street meat" is a great way to save money
Currency
Ensure you come prepared with the correct currency. Some foreign exchange options have better rates, but can incur high percentage fees. Generally speaking, you're safer to do larger transactions when it is a fixed fee.
Other ways to save include:
- Pre-load currency cards and debit cards
- Use Credit Cards to pay for your flights to include free travel insurance
