Stickin' your head out

Style and skills come hand in hand. Some are born with it. Some have to work bloody hard for it. For me, I found myself somewhere in between. It wasn’t hard for me to pickup the foundational skills and add my own style and flavor to anything I did. This made my artistic and creative pursuits my forte more so than my academics or sporting prowess.

The pursuit of perfection is hardly my goal; the pursuit of reaching a level of achievement, something on par with someone who has done well in the field is something I strive for. This may seem a little underwhelming, but when you’re applying yourself over so many different elements, you start to wear very thin and burnout is something I am not new to.
Yet, at certain points in my life, I have to take a step back, relax, take a deep breath and think objectively. At times I find myself being required to put more effort in something more than the other. At this point I realize I can no longer be a jack-of-all-trades and I simply have to stick my head out and step up my game in one part of my life. This may be in the form of a sporting event, a dance or musical event or even just an upcoming exam.
What use is being able to sing really well on a sporting field…? What use is there to be able to run fast when I’m painting or figuring out mathematical equations in an exam? Everything I do is intertwined and yet modulated from everything else. There are times and places when they clash and combine to produce something spectacular. Something beautiful… or something so bad only time will be able to heal the scars…
These are the moments, when sticking your head out, could leave you headless and without direction, or could put you ahead more than you could’ve ever hoped for. Stick your head out… take a chance.
